Would be great to see pictures of your restoration in progress, i did a thread on mine in the ongoing projects section and got lots of encouragement etc from it. You're probably aware the frame paint colour is unique to Zephyr's and i don't think anyone has had any success matching it with powdercoat? If you can i would just clean the frame up, unless it's too far gone.
Sounds great so far though, look forward to more pics

Cheers Eddie, I think I will start a new resto thread on the ongoing projects page. I can see that the frame colour subject has been raised before and some ford graphite grey rattle can is pretty close but I would err on the side of powder coating even if it means going gloss black. My intention with this bike is just to make it as good as I can make it and not worry too much about sticking to factory specs for everything. I’ve got the tee shirt for all that with my many Z1 restos over the years and been under the microscope if it isn’t exactly as it should be.
Going to approach it with a bit more of a free hand in what I like rather than how it should be to keep it “original”
The frame isn’t bad but needs doing because where my resto projects are concerned I’m a it if a perfectionist and whilst the finished bike won’t be too radically different it won’t be completely stock factory but it will be what I like. If that makes sense.
Thanks for your support I will look for your project and read it through for some inspiration over the holidays.
All the best to everyone. Cheers Dave.

Sounds great to me Dave, i only kept the frame on mine std because i like the colour, to be honest though it did want painting and i would've done it black As you'll see if you read my resto thread I'm not bothered about originality!

You did some really great work on your bike Eddie the finished result is amazing. A credit to your hard work and very inspiring for me to crack on with mine.
I got the engine into the stand which helps with the clean up before I start with the strip down. I have also recently invested in a Zinc plating kit from youplate which will help with all the nuts and bolts which normally had to go out to a local plater and be at their mercy as to when I get them back and the quality of the result.
Still experimenting but the results are very promising.

Thanks Dave for the comments, i can't wait for spring and to put some miles on the Zephyr. I just hope 2021 is an improvement with at least some bike meets happening.
I really need to get a plating kit the finish looks really good and probably quite satisfying to do.

I meant to ask have you still got any of the Z1's you've restored or any pics of past resto's?. As much as I like Zephyr's there's just something about a classic Zed

Thanks Eddie it’s a labour of love really restoring Zeds but when I finish them they’re just too nice to risk using as a day to day rider so I recently got myself a nice Rex to use as a rider (which I love btw) :
and now I’m looking forward to getting my teeth into a Zephyr/Z1 lookalike that has the beauty of the Zed styling but rides a bit better and not be terrified to be caught out in the rain. :D
Just seen swamps posting and immediately tried to order a set but just my f##***ng luck got the message not currently shipping to the U.K. :(  :?: been trying for 4 months to find someone still selling these and now that I’ve found them they can’t flaming send them. Anyway I’ve sent an email asking to reserve a set until they can ship them so fingers crossed.

Update on the 4 into 4s is that the German suppliers replied and said that they are happy to reserve a set for me and the reason for the shipping problem is their courier has suspended deliveries to the U.K. because of the current COVID-19 situation also the new brexit rules need to be ironed out in the next few weeks so, the good news is that I have reserved a set :D :D :D the bad news is that it’s probably going to cost me more due to new import taxes etc.
Anyhoo not too bothered about the delay because resto won’t be finished till late spring early Summer so saves me storing them out the way of the missus 8-) so cracking on with the strip down.
Got a lot of the brackets and fasteners re-zinc plated and I was really pleased to find the rear wheel rim was in top condition with only 2 or 3 of the spokes requiring heat to release the nipples.
The frame is now out getting stripped and powder coated. I’m going to look at a graphite grey sample that I picked out of colour chart to see if it’s close enough to the original, if not I’m happy just to go with gloss black.
I’ve stripped the callipers and thinking of doing them gold along with the Center of the discs and perhaps the detailing on the rear shocks but undecided just want to try and be a bit different without being too radical.
Watch this space.
