750 Alternative Carbs?

Post by jaggerboy »

Not that I need any as mine are in very good condition, but I have been tracking various Zephyr 750 carbs on ebay over a few months and noticed how sellers are asking top dollar. (example ZZR1100 carbs going for around £100 (bought a set for my ZZR) and Zephyr 750 carbs in some instances over £200!!)

Were the Zephyr carbs limited to Zephyr models only, hence commanding a higher spares / resale cost or are there other carbs out there from different models of the time that are like for like and a direct replacement?

Cheers

The cvk32 carbs on the Zephyr 750 are identical to the cvk32's used on the 1985-1997 zx600a/b/c Ninjas (also called the gpz600) Most importantly, the carb spacing is identical to the 750, so they are a direct fit!
The only differences are some of the bolt on peripherals are different. Like the diaphragm lids are plastic, idle adjustment knob is extended so the idle can be adjusted while you sit on the bike, the fuel splitter pipes may be plastic instead of aluminum, and the float bowl drains may be a different style and of course some of the jets and needles are different.
But the bodies of the of the carbs are identical and they also share the same pressed in air and pilot air jets as the Zephyr. #100 main air jet and #150 pilot air jet.
The 2001-2005 zr-7's also use the same cvk32, but with the addition of a throttle position sensor (that can be blocked off) and they use two different emulsion tubes instead of two different main jets.
But if you have a old damaged set of Zephyr carbs that you can reuse the correct needles and main jet from, then you can switch everything over to the zx600 carbs. Thats what I did when I searched forever to find a used set of Zephyr carbs only to get e-screwed with a set of carbs that had a cracked carb body and float bowl. So I bought a set of cheaper zx600c carbs and they were identical and so I switched over the needles, jets and misc bits and used them instead.

Hope this helps.

Wow what a detailed response! Obviously you went through some pain before finally finding all this out, so to post and share it with everyone is much appreciated! Its stuff like this which makes the forum great!

Some of the high cost ebay carbs I was following looked in a right state and a couple of them I think even sold

Anyway many thanks, this will certainly give me and others something to take a look at.

Why even the need to buy a replacement set? Replacement diaphragms are still available (certainly till recently as I have some just in case), it was common practice to re-bush carburetor butterfly shafts years ago and I assume some specialist shop would still be doing that task. Float valves, OEM ones still widely available. Float bowl rubbers the same.

I can't think of anything that would necessitate a swap set other than perhaps a previous owner having mucked em up and someone not being sure what they did. I'd much rather rebuild my own ones if needed and be certain what I'm working with.

In the States even Harley Davidson used Kehin CVK32s when they were carbureated, and it also went into off-road vehicles. I have a rack from a ZR-7 which I bought for a song in E-bay. They are currently decorating my living room.
