'93 ZR1100 jetting

Since the original board is gone I can't search for the information I need.
I am looking to solve a richness issue with my carbs. I've gone from sea level in Florida to just over 3000 feet in the panhandle of Texas. I've lost about 5 miles per gallon.
One of my trusted sources told me to swap out the jet needle with a leaner size, but not to worry about the jets themselves.
Who can point me to a supplier? Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Scott

No experience with an 1100, but spent a LOT of time mucking around with jets on the 750 .....

From that exercise, I'd be very surprised if you'll be able to just buy a non Kawasaki branded but genuine Keihin needle, let alone one of the desired size. I wouldn't touch a non genuine Keihin needle or jet because you have no idea what you're getting. And, in many cases when a different size needle was used by Kawasaki the needle jet was also different.

So what I'd do is ..... first figure out what size needle and needle jet is actually in the bike. Only one way to do that, pull em apart. You''ll either need perfect eyesight or one of those magnifying lights to read the tiny numbers stamped on the needle and needle jet.

THEN ..... research all the various needles and needle jets that Kawasaki used in various places around the world. The US models seems to have used a different needle and needle jet to the rest of the world. The Canadian model seems to have used the European ones. You can get all this information from an online parts listing such as CMS. Then try and figure out which might be the one you want. Totally confused yet?

THEN .... find out which ones are still available. For example the CMS site is showing only 2 or the 3 that were used in the USA/Canada model are still available.

Alternatively ...... you could turn the pilot screws in a bit, and drop the float level heights down to their minimum setting i.e. to the larger measurement in the specified range (because float heights are measured up side down). Both these actions will drop the AFR down across the full rev range. How much is just the unknown, but its probably worth a try being relatively easy and free to do.

P.S. And ..... even if you replace the current needle and needle jet with identical part numbers (if they are still available) this may lean up the mixture a little in its relevant range (1/4 to 3/4 throttle). Depends what sort of mileage you have on the bike. They do wear and progressively become larger as the needle flops around inside the needle jet.

PP.SS. And if you think that is complicated, at least the 1100 seems to have only used one emulsion tube. The 750 used about 6 different sizes. That little brass tube with holes in it is the key to how a CV carby works (fuel/air emulsion inside the tube rises and falls in response to throttle position and engine load), and so the number and placement of holes in the tube is critical to the AFR.

Scott,

This is me again from Mulberry, FL. The Bock Tower, in Winter heaven... Remember.

Here the thing is not about Kawasaki, but Keihins CVK carburators, that were(and are) used in a variety applications including Harley Davidsons, and non-motorcycles like off road 4-wheelers.

I've never had a problem finding jets for the Keihins, and go to sites like this http://www.jetsrus.com/index.html

However, never bought needles before...and in this case; you would have to do a little research as what the number of leaner needle would be, and comparing to the number in your bike. (it is also in the factory manual). Calling the site my help also.

....of course, like Freddy mentioned, you know that just turning the mix screw CW makes it leaner, or changing main, or pilot jets does same (even though you don't want to do jets)...

....by the way on the 750 with a few mods, am able to change needles or jets without taking the carbs off the bike.

Thank you for the input Freddy.
I'm glad to see that you are still around Hugo! I still have the pictures of our meet up at the Bok tower.

I still have a bit of time to sort out the carb issue. When I lived in Orlando my ZR1100 got fantastic mileage of 33 mpg. Now I'm down to about 27-28 (at least that was what I was getting here in the panhandle of Texas about 4-5 years ago)

We'll see if I am successful in solving the problem.

I don’t mean to thread hyjack but I have a 92 750c1. Aftermarket exhaust and pods. Any recommendations on sizes?? I’ve been trying to find a stage 3 jet kit for it, but I can’t seem to find one. I’m not sure on the sizes I’m needing.

..in my personal opinion, getting into this 'after market tuning' usually turns into a nightmare and is better to keep it as stock as possible. ….but if the damage has been done and this helps.....

Bigzeph!!! How are you doing! It is good to see familiar names still here!
I'm trying to get the ZR back on the road. We'll see how that goes.
I picked up a Dynojet kit for the '93 ZR1100 on eBay. I'll be interested to see if it helps my mileage issue.
On a side note, I have found that my #1 piston looked to be jetted correctly, but #2, 3, and 4 were heavily coated in thick carbon.
I'll have to keep an eye on that.
