Many thanks for all the replies, after speaking to a mechanic friend I've decided to stick with the recommended dot 4 fluid mainly because he advised that unless i could be sure there were no traces of old fluid left in the system, i could have contamination issues, plus I don't want to use it in the clutch.

With a totally rebuilt system I'm confident i won't have any leaks, the other bike that leaked obviously had a worn master cylinder seal that I didn't notice, I'll sort that one out soon...

And be keeping a closer eye on them in the future
