Ignition coil wire and firing order

Post by Sykesweld »

Can someone tell me which wire go on which coil? I have a red and black on one side and a red and green on the other. I also need the plug to wire order. I have a us model 1990 550 and looked in the manual and have a idea but not sure.

Some electrical swapping can be done, changing direction of spark, but to keep thing orderly as stock, w/out getting too technical, keep it like this:

Front left to right is Black, Red, on left coil. Green, Red on right coil in that order, as if sitting on the bike.

Black fires 1 and 4, Green fires 2 and 3. The red is only the common 12 VDC to both coils.

Left coil then sparks 1 and 4 at the same time, It does not matter but for physical convenience, the left cable goes to 1, and right cable goes to 4.

Right coil sparks 2 and 3 at the same time. For physical convenience, the left cable goes to 2, and the right cable to 3

Thanks , I really do appreciate your reply. It makes sense. I’ll do it just like that and I’ll post a reply. Here is my 1990 zero 550 so far.

That is a aftermarket tank from eBay but I had to do a bit of fabrication to have it work.
