different cam chain adjuster on a 750 d1

Post by David Richard »

The winter blues have kicked in for me in the uk all my bikes are put away but i got excited 2 weeks ago when on ebay a d1 appeared with 3500 miles on it around trip of 450 miles and it was all as it should be ,but i noticed that the 17 mm hex nut on the cam chain adjuster was strange ,what it has is a grub screw and a lock nut on about 6 mm nut so you can tension the small spring and wedge has any one seen this type of option i and would it even have any affect, the motor is very quiet .i dont plan to leave it i should have got a photo of it but its bagged up now any thoughts ,david

By your description, I wouldn't think is 'an option', but rather a home made 'improvement'. The cross wedge is supposed to move only in one direction and locks the main plunger after taking the slack, thus this, I presume, is to put more pressure on the cross wedge and/or lock it up positively.

If so, in my opinion, only makes it more complicated than it is already, and a manual one would be a lot simpler and also locks everything positively.

When I bought my D1 it has a home modification mod done to the automatic tensioner, not unlike what you may be describing. It was a screw inserted in the end of the main shaft spring cap.

Perhaps it was a common type of mod in its day???
