Exhaust

Going to replace the old 4-2 system. Will the oil cooler need to be removed to get to the bolts?

Hello,
On a 1100 you can remove the exhaust with no need to remove the oil cooler, a decent set of sockets and spanners will do the job. You can unbolt the cooler without disconnecting it and move it forwards for a bit more access but you shouldn't need to. This probably applies to the 750 as well?

I believe you have an 1100 so disregard this if not applicable. Whenever I'm pulling the exhaust off my 750, I always remove the oil cooler and both oil pipes. Yes it means an oil change. To me there is a difference between must do something, and making life as easy as possible. The 750 uses a system of 'half pipes' behind the bracket things that bold up to the cylinder head. The headers are SO much easier to refit to the cylinder head keeping those pesky 'half pipes' in place with the oil cooler and pipe work removed.

How long does it take to remove the oil cooler and pipework? On a 750 less than 5 minutes. With them in place I'll bet someone on a 750 will take 30 minutes longer (due to the half-pipes wanted to constantly fall out) and the cost of a 6 pack of beers to calm their frustration after doing the job. I'm a great believer in removing whatever is necessary to make any job as easy as possible. It is usually quicker in the long run, and often the difference between an exercise in frustration and enjoying the task.
