1100 strange engine noise

Post by zep93 »

Little help needed. It starts and idles without any problems, but after driving first 200m the bike engine is making strange rattling noise. It is only when accelorating between 2500 and 5000 rpm. It seems to come from right side of the engine. I removed right engine cover and underneath everything is normal. Today I recorded it and please listen to this clip with headphones: https://youtu.be/Len1DcXRZkE
Maybe somone can suggest from yor experience what that can be? Chain, valves?

could be an exhaust gasket blowing under load . might be worth checking if all the exhaust flange nuts are tight enough. ( or get a 'good' mate to put his head at the front of the engine and rev the nuts off it... see what he can see  )

It sounds familiar to an issue I had with my beamer where part of the distribution chain guide had broken off, it also was only rattling between 1500 en 3000 rpm. Not saying you have the same problem though...

So here is the reason for this strange noise - the inner tube of exhaust pipe is loose because of age process.

Small welding dots helped to get rid of the noise but I still need new pipes. Anyone has extra set for sale?

maybe look for a set of Black Widow headers. They are Stainless and don't have inner tubes. made for the next 50 years ;)

Well done, great to see you sussed this out, I know that feeling when you get to the bottom of it and it wasn't a major engine problem!

welll.... before discovering the main reason.... now how can I say this politely.... first the workshop discovered that one exhaust valve is not closing correctly (compression was lower than others). So, they took the head off and sent it to the master who made the head as new again (honing, cutting the valve sockets etc).

Then, as the engine was already open (and in winter time you get all sort of interesting ideas:)), we decided to look inside the cylinders. It was a mistake. Because now we discovered, that the cylinders were a little too much oval. Only a little by factory manual. I have to admit that there was a little beer involved in the decision making on that dark evening...

So one month later, when the new pistons and honed cylinder was installed, the engine noise was exactly like it was before all these works...

Some beers later we looked inside the exhaust pipes. Master took his welding machine and made one spot welding. The noise disappeared...

And now I need a beer...
