Removing te spark plug means high voltage energy will be build up in the ignition coil, energy that needs to go somewhere, it simply tries to find the path of lowest resistance and in some occasion it will pull a spark within the high voltage coil itself damaging the internal insulation (shortening it)...

At least this happens frequently on 2 stroke mopeds from the 70s.

Done it plenty of times and never had a problem. Remember each coil fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously. Remove the lead of one of those spark plugs and surely its reasonably to expect all the high voltage electricity should still discharge through the other connected spark plug.

Yes! I stand corrected, never thought about the other spark plug :oops:
Mopeds only have one cylinder... ;)
